Geethanjali, the Nagarjuna-Girija Shetty starrer romantic drama directed by Mani Ratnam, will have a theatrical release 36 years after its original release.

Boorle Sivaprasad, chairman of Sri Padmini Cinemas, has acquired the worldwide re-release rights for the film, excluding Chennai. Talking about his decision, Sivaprasad said, “This film is very dear to me. Therefore, I am very happy to acquire the re-release rights of Geethanjali. We sincerely believe that the audience will love this wonderful film." The makers are reportedly planning to make necessary 4K restoration for the re-release print.

Produced by C Padmaja and Chittamuru Praveen Kumar Reddy under the banner of Bhagyalakshmi Enterprises, Geethanjali marked the only Mani Ratnam film in Telugu cinema, and his only collaboration with Nagarjuna.

A few weeks ago, another of Nagarjuna’s iconic films Shiva, which released in the same year as Geethanjali, too had a massive theatrical re-release.

Besides attaining commercial success, the film was also the recipient of National Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and 5 Nandi Awards — Story, Choreography, Cinematography, Art Direction, and Male Comedian. The film was also remade in Hindi later, as Yaad Rakhegi Duniya.
