The story begins when a highly valuable diamond smuggled from abroad into Tamil Nadu ends up in the hands of a clever local man, Natty. Once he learns the diamond’s true worth, he decides to keep it for himself instead of handing it over as planned. However, his plan backfires when he gets caught by the police and spends several months in prison.
After his release, Natty returns to retrieve the diamond he had hidden earlier — only to find that the place has now been converted into a temple. To get his diamond back, he disguises himself as a fake saint and infiltrates the ashram. What happens next, and whether he succeeds in his plan, forms the rest of Kambi Katna Kathai.
Natty’s clever tricks and witty lines during the heist are major highlights, giving the film a flavour reminiscent of Sathuranga Vettai. His dialogues as the fake saint — especially the prophetic-style punch lines — evoke laughter in many scenes. Singampuli’s continuous comic one-liners from start to finish keep the audience entertained, though the inclusion of a few double-meaning jokes could have been avoided.
Mukesh, DSR., and Gothandan deliver solid performances adding strength to several sequences. Director Rajanathan Periyasamy successfully turns a simple storyline into an engaging screenplay filled with humor and fun moments. Satizh Selvam’s music shows promise and hints at a talent to watch in the future.
While the industry is flooded with big-budget spectacles, Kambi Katna Kathai proves that small-scale comedy films with lesser-known actors can still find a place in the audience’s hearts. Despite a few moments of double-meaning humor that test patience, the film’s lighthearted narrative and situational comedy make it a pleasant entertainer — one you can laugh through and walk out smiling.
