Marriage may be a conventional milestone for many, but Shruti Haasan has consistently questioned whether a legal document needs to define a relationship. The actor, who has spoken openly about valuing her independence, has previously said that she believes in loyalty and commitment but does not necessarily associate either with marriage.

Her perspective, however, isn't rooted in a rejection of companionship. In fact, Shruti has said that she enjoys being with a partner and likes the idea of two people choosing each other every day. It is the expectations surrounding marriage, rather than companionship itself, that appear to make her uncomfortable.

In a recent conversation with Soha Ali Khan on her podcast, Shruti revealed that she had come close to getting married once but said the experience did not make her fearful of marriage itself. Instead, she questioned the emphasis placed on the legal paperwork and the elaborate celebrations that often accompany weddings. “I came close to marriage, and it didn’t really scare me that much when push came to shove,” she said.

Shruti went on to explain that she likes companionship but has never felt the need to fit herself into a conventional mould. Speaking about marriage, she questioned the purpose behind the paperwork and lavish spending involved in weddings, asking, “Who are we doing this for?” She added, “I enjoy that my partner and I pick each other up every day, but not because of the paperwork.”

The actor was particularly candid about the financial aspect of weddings. While clarifying that she was not judging people who choose to spend heavily on their celebrations, Shruti said such expenditure bothers her personally. “No shaming the big spenders, but that always bothers me. Give it to charity!” she remarked.

Shruti's comments come after she had spoken about marriage in an earlier interview, where she described herself as “petrified” of attaching the identity she had built for herself to a piece of paper. At the same time, she stressed that she believes in the values traditionally associated with marriage and said she is capable of offering loyalty and commitment without requiring a legal certificate.

Her views on marriage do not extend to motherhood. During the podcast conversation, Shruti said she would love to become a mother and is open to adoption. She also expressed a desire to experience motherhood biologically, describing it as an extension of herself. Shruti was previously in a relationship with artist Santanu Hazarika, with the couple confirming their split in 2024 after dating for around four years. The actor subsequently said that she was single and focusing on her work and enjoying her life.

On the work front, Shruti was last seen alongside Rajinikanth in Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie. She is currently attached to Aakasamlo Oka Tara, which stars Dulquer Salmaan in the lead.
