Atlee has credited Vijay with playing a pivotal role in shaping his career, recalling how the actor continued to back him after Raja Rani and eventually encouraged him to take up Jawan with Shah Rukh Khan. Speaking at the audio launch of Vijay Sethupathi-starrer Baththa in Chennai, the filmmaker also spoke about Vijay’s transition into politics and his perceived connection with the younger generation.
Reflecting on his journey, Atlee said that while the clothes and other material possessions he has today came through his own hard work, he would not have reached this position without Vijay. He recalled that after the success of Raja Rani, Vijay continued to give him opportunities through films including Theri, Mersal and Bigil.
Atlee also recalled the moment Shah Rukh Khan visited his office for a meeting and encouraged him to take up Jawan. “I don't know what you'll do or how you'll do it, but don't keep circling around my feet. Please do this film. Your life will change,” Atlee recalled Shah Rukh telling him. The filmmaker said the decision eventually changed his life and expressed his gratitude towards Vijay for the opportunities that preceded it. “I'm so happy and thankful to Vijay anna,” he said.
Atlee added that he does not mention Vijay at every stage expecting another opportunity from him, noting that Vijay is now the Chief Minister. “But no matter what, our anna will always be our anna,” he said.
The filmmaker's remarks also touched upon the scrutiny surrounding public figures and social media discussions. Without referring to any specific controversy, Atlee said that people will always have something to say and narrated the familiar story of a man and his donkey to make the point that one cannot live by constantly responding to public opinion.
He further spoke about the next generation's engagement with politics, attributing what he described as their increased awareness to Vijay. “The next generation will be strong in politics, and the reason for that is Vijay,” Atlee said. He added that he was not speaking as a politician and that politics is relevant to everyone, while urging people to think for themselves and do what they believe is right for society.
Meanwhile, Atlee is presenting Baththa, which reunites Vijay Sethupathi with director Balaji Tharaneetharan for the third time after Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom and Seethakaathi. The 1980s-set film also stars Lijomol Jose and features music by Sai Abhyankkar. The film is scheduled to release worldwide on October 1.
