A successful film can have several faces, but the way that success is celebrated can sometimes create a conversation of its own. DC was built around an unusual combination: a filmmaker stepping in front of the camera, a director known for intense storytelling taking charge behind it, and a composer whose music became a significant part of the film’s identity.

The film also marked a particularly unconventional career move for Lokesh Kanagaraj, who moved from directing some of Tamil cinema’s biggest blockbusters to playing the protagonist. Arun Matheswaran, meanwhile, opted for a more linear narrative than his earlier films, while Anirudh Ravichander’s music and background score became another talking point around the film. Wamiqa Gabbi, who played Chandra, was also central to the story and featured prominently opposite Lokesh.

Following the film’s commercial success, producer Kalanithi Maran has now rewarded three members of the DC team with brand-new BMW cars. Sun Pictures shared pictures and a video of Maran congratulating director Arun Matheswaran, lead actor Lokesh Kanagaraj and composer Anirudh Ravichander before presenting them with the keys to the luxury vehicles.

The gesture has predictably become a talking point beyond the value of the gifts themselves. Several fans on social media, particularly X, have questioned the absence of Wamiqa Gabbi from the list of recipients, with some arguing that her contribution to the film warranted similar recognition. One discussion on Reddit, for instance, described her as having “carried the second half” of the film, while another thread repeatedly asked why she had not received a car.

There is, however, no indication that Wamiqa was promised a reward or that the producer's decision was intended as a slight. The gifts are a gesture of appreciation from the production house, and the reasons behind the selection of recipients have not been publicly explained.

The debate comes at a time when DC has already established itself as one of Tamil cinema's notable successes of the year. The film crossed the Rs 100 crore mark worldwide during its theatrical run, a significant achievement for a project that marked Lokesh's acting debut. It was made on a reported budget of Rs 25 crore and crossed the milestone within weeks of its August 7 release.

Wamiqa's performance has also remained part of the film's wider conversation. The actor plays Chandra, while Sanjana Krishnamoorthy appears as Parvathy, with the film drawing from the Devdas template through its central relationships.
