PC Sreeram calls R Balki film with Ilaiyaraaja music ‘Tamil cinema at its best'

Recently, we reported about filmmaker R Balki being set to make his directorial debut in Tamil with a film, featuring music by Ilaiyaraaja and cinematography by PC Sreeram. The film brings the trio back together after collaboration on films such as Cheeni Kum (2007), Paa (2009) and Shamitabh (2015). The film will have eight tracks from Ilaiyaraaja. Sreeram has been Balki's go-to cinematographer for all of his films except for 2022’s Chup and the subsequent year's Ghoomer.

The upcoming project is set to mark Balki's first release since his 2023’s cricket-based film Ghoomer. According to reports, the film stars Vidya Balan. The film brings Balki and Vidya back together for the first time after their collaboration on 2009’s Paa, which the cinematographer regards as one of the filmmaker’s finest works.

On Saturday, Sreeram revealed through social media that he has been in “nonstop shoot” for the film. He also called it, “Tamil cinema at its best.” This statement is only going to excite viewers, who have been fortunate enough to watch quality Tamil films this year, including Dorothy, featuring Ilaiyaraaja’s music.

On the other hand, Balki is a self-confessed fan of the maestro’s music. Balki’s cinema is known for reinventing his classic compositions, providing these with new life, fresh arrangements, and Hindi lyrics, in addition to creating original tracks. For example, the title track from Cheeni Kum is adapted from Ilaiyaraaja's iconic hit ‘Mandram Vandha’ from the film Mouna Ragam. Likewise, ‘Stereophonic Sannata’ from Shamitabh is an adaptation of ‘Aasaiya Kaathula’ from Johnny, starring Rajinikanth and Sridevi. The upcoming film, however, is set to break the R Balki tradition, with Ilaiyaraaja composing eight original tracks for it.

No further information about the film is available, including its genre and story. The film commenced production in late September.
