There has been widespread speculation about Sun Pictures entering a deal with Prime Video over the streaming rights of their film Jailer 2, starring Rajinikanth and directed by Nelson. According to reports, the deal between the production house and the streamer is worth 160 crore, and it involves a four-week-long streaming window. In layman terms, this means that the film should arrive on Prime Video four weeks after its theatrical release.
Reports say that the existence of this deal is the reason why multiplex chains such as Cinepolis and PVR INOX are yet to release Jailer 2 in Hindi. While Jailer 2 is still available with Hindi dubs in major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad, among other locations in North India, the absence of the film from the said multiplex venues has drawn flak from audiences.
Several trade analysts and fans question the decision by Sun Pictures to get into a streaming deal for the film, especially considering the prospect of a tentpole film such as it to earn a massive amount at the box office. They argue that by locking the film to a four-week streaming window instead of the traditional timeline, the makers fail to make the most of the box office potential of the film. It is worth noting that multiplex chains in India require a longer streaming window to release films in their locations.
The aforesaid criticism, which has been around from the lead up to the film's October 15 release, has only intensified after the positive response from audiences who attended the first few shows for it. According to them, a sureshot blockbuster is written all over the Rajinikanth starrer.
Written and directed by Nelson, the Jailer sequel also stars Ramya Krishnan, Mirnaa, Yogi Babu, Vinayakan, Shivarajkumar, Jaffer Sadiq, Mohanlal, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vijay Sethupathi, SJ Suryah, Hrithik Roshan, Vidya Balan, Jackie Shroff, Apeksha Porwal, Mithun Chakraborty, and, Hakkim Shah, among others.
