In a film built around a superstar, the supporting cast can add several layers to the narrative, while the lead remains the anchor around whom the spectacle revolves. That balance is particularly relevant to Jailer 2, which brings together actors from different film industries for the sequel to Nelson's 2023 blockbuster. For Vidya Balan, who is making her Tamil cinema debut with the film, the ensemble has its own distinctive flavours, but there is little doubt about who leads the feast.

In an interview with Variety India, Vidya compared the film's ensemble to a dish in which everyone contributes their own tadka, while Rajinikanth remains the main dish. The analogy reflects the scale of the cast assembled for the sequel, which includes several familiar faces alongside actors making their debut in the franchise.

Vidya's comments come amid a series of interviews in which she has spoken about working with Rajinikanth for the first time. In a separate conversation with Variety India, she recalled expecting the Superstar to make a grand entrance on set, complete with metaphorical trumpets. Instead, he walked towards the group quietly while she was chatting with director Nelson, the cinematographer and assistant directors. “There is no shosha,” she said, describing his lack of pretension and adding that his authenticity was part of what made him so loved by audiences.

The actor also revealed that Rajinikanth had told her early in their interaction that he watched her social media reels and found them funny. The small gesture helped her feel comfortable around him. Vidya said his presence eased the pressure of working with a star of his stature, as he did not make fellow performers feel as though they were being watched or judged. She described him as a calming, generous presence who had a word of appreciation for everyone on the team.

For Vidya, the film also marks a long-awaited opportunity to work in Tamil cinema. Speaking to Mid-Day, she said she hoped Jailer 2 would be the beginning of more work in the industry, adding that she was thrilled to be part of the world of Jailer. She plays Kantha, a character introduced by the makers as fierce and fearless, who places great importance on her family.

Directed by Nelson and produced by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 sees Rajinikanth reprise his role as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. The ensemble includes Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa, alongside Mithun Chakraborty, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Vidya Balan. Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music. The sequel is scheduled to release in theatres worldwide on October 15.
