For a superstar film, the opening day is often a spectacle of its own, with advance bookings, fan celebrations and box-office predictions building anticipation well before the first show begins. But when a sequel arrives after a blockbuster, the expectations are considerably higher: it is no longer just about securing a strong start but also about measuring up to the success of its predecessor and the records set by other major releases.

Rajinikanth's recent films have demonstrated the scale of his theatrical pull, with Coolie and Jailer drawing substantial audiences across domestic and overseas markets. With the Superstar returning as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the sequel is now being watched as a potential contender for one of the biggest opening days in Tamil cinema.

According to several trade reports, Jailer 2 is projected to gross between Rs 125 crore and Rs 140 crore worldwide on its opening day, with the overseas market expected to play a significant role. Trade analysts have also offered a more optimistic estimate, that the Nelson directorial could earn around Rs 150 crore worldwide on Day 1. These are trade predictions, however, and the film's actual collections will be known only after its release.

The projections come amid strong advance-booking figures. The film has crossed Rs 80 crore in worldwide advance bookings for its opening weekend by the morning of October 14. Sacnilk's live tracker also indicated substantial demand, with Day 1 advance sales continuing to rise as the release approached. The figures vary across reports depending on the period covered and whether blocked seats are included.

The overseas market could be particularly important in determining whether Jailer 2 reaches the higher end of these estimates. The film crossed $3 million in overseas pre-sales, with trade expectations suggesting that its international opening-day gross could reach $7–8 million.

If the Rs 140-crore estimate materialises, Jailer 2 could challenge some of the biggest opening-day figures reported for Indian films. The film could surpass the worldwide opening figures attributed to Yash's Toxic with Rs 136 crore, Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan at Rs 129 crore and Ranbir Kapoor's Animal at Rs 116 crore. However, it would still fall short of the reported Rs 142 crore for Leo and Rs ₹151 crore for Rajinikanth's own Coolie. It would not surpass Dhurandhar 2, whose reported opening-day collection stands at Rs 203 crore.

For Rajinikanth, the immediate benchmark is the first Jailer, which reportedly opened to around Rs 91 crore worldwide in 2023. The sequel's projected opening would put it comfortably ahead of that figure, although comparisons between films can vary depending on whether the numbers refer to domestic net collections, worldwide gross or advance sales.

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 sees Rajinikanth reprise his role as retired jailer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. The film features Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa, alongside Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Mithun Chakraborty, Jackie Shroff, Vidya Balan, SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Vijay Sethupathi. Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music. The film is scheduled to release in theatres worldwide on October 15.
