Scriptwriter-turned-director Rathna Kumar made his debut through Meyaadha Maan in 2017, which starred Vaibhav and Priya Bhavani Shankar in lead roles. Almost a decade after its release, the director has expressed his interest to write a sequel for the film.

In an interview with Touring Talkies, Rathna Kumar said, "I have plans to make Meyaadha Maan 2 and a few other movies. I want to create films that are feel-good...the kind of films that make you feel satisfied when you come out of theatres; Simple stories that run parallel to reality. In this space, that is what I feel would be easier to work on, and would heal me in life. I'd like to focus on positive stories rather than dark, gory movies."

The director further quoted examples of 12th Fail, Premalu and Little Hearts. "They are soulful... despite being small-scale films they have small beautiful moments that I want to expand and work on. We feel that it is popular people and heroes who dominate the world and its conversations, but it is the small beings and feelings that cause a major impact in our lives," he added.

Also starring Vivek Prasanna, Indhuja Ravichandran, Arun Prasath, and Amrutha Srinivasan in supporting roles, Meyaadha Maan is an adaptation of Kumar's own short film Madhu, which he had directed for the Stone Bench Creations. The story revolves around ‘Idhayam’ Murali, a carefree light music singer, and explores his bonds with the people closest to him—his longtime unrequited love Madhumitha, his sister Sudarvizhi, and his best friend Vinoth.

Rathna Kumar is currently awaiting the release of 29, which stars Vidhu (Jigarthanda Double X and Retro) and Preethi Asrani in lead roles. Other cast members include Master Mahendran, Avinash, Shenaz Fathima, Premkumar, among others.

29 is produced by Lokesh Kanagaraj, through his G Squad banner and by Kaarthikeyan S under the Stone Bench banner. The latter is the production house established by director Karthik Subburaj, and was behind Ratna Kumar's directorial debut Meyaadha Maan.

29 marks a comeback to direction for the filmmaker after 2022's Gulu Gulu. Meanwhile, he made contributions to the dialogues in films, such as Master and Vikram.
