Director Rathna Kumar’s upcoming romantic drama 29 is set to release on May 8, landing between two major releases—Dhanush’s Kara and the Suriya–RJ Balaji starrer Karuppu. At the pre-release event, the filmmaker opened up about his concerns over the film getting overshadowed by the two big star-led movies.
"I was worried about my film releasing between Kara and Karuppu. I conveyed the same to my producer," Rathna Kumar shared. "The director assured me that the movie is releasing for summer during the weekdays, and capitalises on the vacation time for many youngsters. Previously, I had a clash with Vijay's Mersal when my film Meyaadha Maan released in 2017, but this is a unique challenge in itself," he added.
For the unversed, Kara, directed by Vignesh Raja, has opened in theatres on Thursday while Karuppu releases on May 14.
He went on to add that 29 would be akin to a "soft gentle breeze" on the beach. "Just like you saw in the glimpse, the film will make you feel a myriad of emotions," he said.
Vidhu, who was seen in Kartik Subburaj's Jigarthanda Double X and Retro, stars alongside Preethi Asrani as the lead. The cast of 29 also features Master Mahendran, Avinash, Shenaz Fathima, Premkumar, among others.
29 is produced by Lokesh Kanagaraj, through his G Squad banner and by Kaarthikeyan S under the Stone Bench banner. The latter is the production house established by director Karthik Subburaj, and was behind Ratna Kumar's directorial debut Meyaadha Maan.
29 marks a comeback to direction for the filmmaker after 2022's Gulu Gulu. Meanwhile, he made contributions to the dialogues in films, such as Master and Vikram.
