Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay has been allowed to campaign for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections in Perambur by the Election Commission. He is now set to start his campaign in Perambur on March 30, Monday. His campaign in the area has been a key point of discussion in the build-up to the elections.
The latest development comes after Vijay filed a request for the campaign in the locality with the Election Commission. Vijay had to file an appeal after the Greater Chennai Police rejected his request for an election campaign meeting in Perambur's Mullai Nagar Junction, citing space- and safety-related constraints. The police said that the area cannot fit in 3,000 individuals, for which Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam recently sought permission.
However, TVK leadership and Vijay described the rejection as an "attempt to crush the democratic rights” of a party that is new and growing with “massive public support”. They alleged that the ruling DMK was blocking their momentum with their administrative power.
As a way of resolving this, TVK filed an appeal with the Chief Electoral Officer, and after another application and the commission's intervention, permission has been granted for a new campaign schedule. Reportedly, to adhere to the safety rules and regulations, the party has applied for a more scaled-down or controlled gathering than the initially planned rally.
On the film front, Vijay is still awaiting the release of his final film, Jana Nayagan, directed by H Vinoth. The film may have to clear further scrutiny by the Election Commission after the Censor Board recommended its involvement in the issue.
