The 72nd National Awards for the best in Indian cinema for the year 2024, was announced late on Saturday. Amongst Tamil films Amaran and Maharaja were the biggest winners alongside Dhanush, who also bagged multiple awards.

Amaran, which is a biopic about the life of late Major Mukund Varadarajan, saw its director Rajkumar Periyasamy win Best Direction, music composer GV Prakash Kumar win for Best Music Direction (Background Music), and editor R Kalaivannan winning Best Editing.

Maharaja was a drama thriller which revolves around a father's quest to seek justice for his daughter. Winning as part of the film is debutante Sachina Namidass who won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress. Stunt choreographer Anl Arasu becomes the first winner for a Tamil film in the category of Best Stunt Choreography for his work in Maharaja.

While Dhanush got his first National Award as a director for Raayan, which won the Best Tamil Film award, he was given a Special Mention for his performance in Arun Matheswaran's Captain Miller. The latter won the National Award for Best Feature Film Promoting National, Social and Environmental values.

Meanwhile, sound designer Suren G got a Special Mention for his work in Meiyazhagan, with TS Hari Hara Sudhan getting the Best Sound Design award for the film Blue.
