Arun Matheswaran's Captain Miller was the recipient of a unique award at the 72nd National Film Awards, for which the winners were announced late on Saturday. The awards which were for the films of 2024, included Captain Miller which was the recipient of the National Award for Best Feature Film Promoting National, Social and Environmental values.
Speaking to CE about this win, director Arun shared his elation and happiness for the win. “I am happy that Captain Miller got this type of recognition as one of the goals were to highlight the issue of equality," said the director.
The director also celebrated Dhanush's win for his performance in the film, which got a Special Mention. "I thank Sathya Jyothi Films and Dhanush sir for their support. Seeing Dhanush sir getting recognised for this film is a testament to the efforts he took for this film."
Arun went on to say, "Getting this recognition on a national level motivates us to write more and create more.” When asked if this prompted him to write about more social causes within his stories he said, "I write social causes into a story as I write the story, I don't write the story around social causes. But the hope is to bring more awareness to underrepresented causes."
Captain Miller is a revenge drama featuring Dhanush as the titular character, who sets out to save his village from the British colonisers. The cast of the film includes Shivarajkumar, Priyanka Mohan, Nivedhithaa Sathish, Aditi Balan, Sundeep Kishan, Vinoth Kishan, among others.
GV Prakash Kumar composed music for Captain Miller. The composer was also the recipient of the National Award for Best Music Direction (Background Music) for his work in Amaran.
