Actor-director-producer Sundar C had recently made his surprise entry into the political fray in Tamil Nadu as he was named as the candidate for the Madurai Central constituency for the upcoming 2026 state Legislative Assembly elections. As reported earlier, he will be representing the Puthiya Neethi Katchi (PNK) under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), in alliance with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

His fellow actor Vijay, who also joined politics two years ago under Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is facing his first major elections and he is positioned as a major competitor in the state, in addition to ADMK and DMK's bi-polar party rivalry. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday on the elections and Vijay's political game plan, Sundar C, who is contesting under AIADMK's 'two-leaves' symbol, said that he and Vijay have mutual love and respect for each other, but in his constituency, the competition is only between the two dravidian parties.

"Vijay and I have mutual love and respect for each other. My wife (Khushbu Sundar) considers him as her younger brother. He also addresses my wife as 'akka'. So, I won't criticise him, his candidates or his party. But if you consider the Madurai Central constituency that I am standing in for the elections, the votes share between the two leaves and the rising sun symbols," he said.

Earlier, speaking on his nomination and entry to politics, he said, "Until now I believe that as a director, producer, and an actor, I have entertained you through my films. I now start a new life, with my entry into politics. I am contesting for the Madurai Central constituency under the two leaves symbol. I hope that all of you, who have supported me through my cinematic journey, will support me through this new one too."

On the film front, Sundar C was last seen in Gangers (2025), and is currently engaged in filming of Vishal's upcoming project Purushan, which marks his reunion with the actor after Aambala and Madha Gaja Raja. He also has Mookuthi Amman 2, the sequel to RJ Balaji's 2020 comedy film in the pipeline. Nayanthara is reprising her role as the titular character for the upcoming sequel. Sundar C is also set to join hands with filmmaker Dhorai VZ once again for an upcoming horror-thriller. The yet-to-be-titled film will mark their third collaboration after Iruttu (2019) and Thalainagaram 2 (2023).

The Tamil Nadu assembly elections will take place on April 23, with results set to be declared on May 4.
