It is well known that directors Pa Ranjith and Mari Selvaraj have deeply embedded politics in their filmmaking, with themes mostly revolving around casteism, brahminical hegemony and issues stemming from social hierarchy and patriarchy present in the society. Pa Ranjith has also been vocal about caste attrocities and backed several publications, short films and documentaries under his Neelam Productions banner.

This had led to many speculating that he would make his mainstream political entry soon. Mari Selvaraj recently revealed that he too posed the same question to the fellow director. In his response, Ranjith had reportedly smiled, without revealing a concrete answer for the query. Later, Mari said, "He will make his entry into politics. He is known for taking a strong step towards whatever he sets his mind to. Neelam might become a 'makkam iyakkam' (People's movement) in the future."

Besides films, Ranjith has also extended his social work with 'Neelam Panpaatu Maiyam' (Neelam Cultural Center) which conducted arts festivals, launched Koogai Film Movement and setting a library under the same name. The organisation had also collaborated with the label Madras Records to form a 19-piece band called The Casteless Collective that includes four rappers, seven instrumentalists and eight gaana musicians..

While Mari Selvaraj is awaiting the release of Bison, starring Dhruv Vikram in the lead, Ranjith is busy with the production of his upcoming film Vettuvam with VR Dinesh.

A sports drama, Bison is reportedly is based on the life of Kabaddi player Manathi Ganesan. It also stars Anupama Parameshwaran, Lal, Ameer, Pasupathi, Rajisha Vijayan Kalaiyarasan, Hari Krishnan Anbudurai, Azhagam Perumal, and Madhan Dhakshinamoorthy. After Pariyerum Perumal, Pa Ranjith has once again backed Bison along with Aditi Anand under their Neelam Studios banner. Sameer Nair and Deepak Segal of Applause Entertainment also produced the film. The film is slated to release in theatres on October 17.

According to reports, Vettuvam follows a gangster at a village who surrenders to the law enforcement to evade his foes, only to discover that the system of imprisonment is worse. It also stars Arya, Sobhita Dhulipala, Kalaiyarasan, Mime Gopi, Guru Somasundaram, Shabeer Kallarakkal, and John Vijay, among others.
