Controversy has erupted around Bigg Boss Tamil Season 9, hosted by Vijay Sethupathi, after Thamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) leader and MLA Velumurugan called for a complete ban on the show. The politician, whose party is an ally of the ruling DMK, claimed that the popular reality show “denigrates Tamil culture” and promotes “indecency” on national television.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, Velumurugan clarified that he is not against television entertainment as a whole but took issue with the alleged “vulgarity” portrayed on Bigg Boss Tamil. “There are several shows that promote Tamil culture well,” he said, “but Bigg Boss airs vile acts that destroy our culture, ethics, and values. The scriptwriters don’t care if the Tamil community suffers any harm. They are only focused on money.”

He further criticised the show for airing what he described as “disgusting body movements, kissing scenes, and bedroom scenes,” adding that such content was unfit for family viewing. “These are scenes one cannot watch in the presence of a mature girl or children. They’ve only stopped short of showing sexual intercourse,” he alleged. “Should Vijay TV really make money by continuing to host such a disgusting, indecent programme?”

Velumurugan said he has already raised the matter formally. “I have approached Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker Appavu with an attention-seeking motion,” he revealed. “If the Speaker does not admit the motion and if the Chief Minister or the IT and Broadcast departments don’t act, we will stage a major protest inside the Bigg Boss arena and at Vijay Television’s office along with thousands of women.”

Bigg Boss Tamil 9 premiered on October 5 with 20 contestants, marking actor Vijay Sethupathi’s return as host for the second time.
