After creating a stir in theatres, Bad Girl, the Tamil coming-of-age drama presented by filmmakers Vetrimaaran and Anurag Kashyap, is now winning hearts on JioHotstar. The film, directed by debutant Varsha Bharath, has earned a new admirer in actor Sobhita Dhulipala, who recently shared her admiration for the film through social media.
In a now-expired Instagram Story, Sobhita posted the film’s poster and penned an emotional note that read, “Bad Girl had me smirking AND tearing up. I feel seen. Beheld. A film that ripens by the minute. Heavily recommend to everyone, especially the girls. This one’s for us, y’all. Shout out to @varsha.bharath3 and @anjalisivaraman—you guys are simply beyond. Watch it on JioHotstar.”
Helmed by Varsha Bharath, Bad Girl traces the journey of Ramya (Anjali Sivaraman), a spirited young woman navigating societal expectations and personal rebellion. The film also features Shanthipriya as Sundari and Hridhu Haroon as Nalan in pivotal roles.
Despite its acclaim, Bad Girl was surrounded by controversy ahead of its release. The trailer drew criticism from certain quarters, with some alleging that the film depicted a particular community in a negative light. Filmmaker G Mohan took to X (formerly Twitter) to claim that Vetrimaaran and Anurag Kashyap were “targeting Brahmin girls,” writing, “Portraying a Brahmin girl’s personal life is always a bold and refreshing film for this clan. What more can be expected from Vetrimaran, Anurag Kasyap & Co… Bashing Brahmin father and mother is old and not trendy.”
Sobhita’s praise, however, adds to the growing list of voices appreciating the film for its raw and honest storytelling. Notably, Vetri Maaran closed his production banner, Grass Roots Films, after producing Bad Girl.
On the work front, Sobhita recently made her Hollywood debut opposite Dev Patel in Monkey Man, followed by Love, Sitara. She will next reprise her role in the upcoming season of Made in Heaven, an announcement for which is awaited.
