The other day, a Dalit software engineer was reportedly hacked to death in Palayamkottai by his long-time girlfriend's brother. Many celebrities have condemned this act of honour killing through social media, with filmmaker Pa Ranjith being the latest to do so. The director, known for his films that work as a strong statement against casteism and atrocities on Dalits, gave a detailed account of the incident before criticising the government and law enforcement for their inaction. The accused in the case is reportedly a 21-year-old named S Surjith. Reports also suggest that Surjith’s parents incited him to commit the crime and are named co-accused in the case. Ranjith questioned the lack of arrest, despite the 21-year-old and his parents’ alleged involvement in the matter, and of government officials’ visit to the victim's family.
He demanded immediate arrest of Surjith’s parents. He also asked why when such incidents happen and there is an immediate media spotlight, it is the Scheduled Castes who have to fight for justice. He wondered how an investigation could take place without any bias considering that the accused’s parents themselves are police officers. He urged a transparent investigation from the government without giving room for such doubts.
Earlier, filmmaker Mari Selvaraj and Kamal Haasan also condemned the incident and asked for strong action from the government.
