Filmmaker AR Murugadoss, who is currently promoting his upcoming film Madharaasi starring Sivakarthikeyan, recently weighed in on why Tamil cinema does not focus on making films that earn Rs 1000 crore.

Speaking to Valaipechu Voice, the director observed that Tamil filmmakers approach cinema differently from their counterparts in other industries. “Filmmakers in other languages tend to concentrate on entertaining people only, whereas Tamil directors tend to view cinema from an educational standpoint,” he said.

Murugadoss explained that this unique perspective often shapes the storytelling. “Tamil cinema typically carries messages of what viewers should or should not do, which impacts their commercial success,” he noted.

He also cautioned against direct comparisons with other regional film industries. “Tamil directors are not to be compared directly with filmmakers from other regions because their goals are different,” he added.

In the same interview, the filmmaker also took responsibility for Sikandar's underperformance, stating that he was unable to execute his vision for the movie. Comparing Salman’s Sikandar and Aamir Khan’s Ghajini, Murugadoss reflected on why the latter had succeeded but the former failed. “I could pull off Ghajini because it was a remake, not an original script. I had already done it before, so I had complete command. With Sikandar, that wasn’t the case. I’m not saying I won’t return to Hindi cinema; I definitely will if I find my comfort zone. But when the audience can’t connect with my thinking, it affects me deeply,” he said.

Madharaasi also stars Vidyut Jammwal, Vikranth, Rukmini Vasanth and Shabeer Kallarakkal alongside Sivakarthikeyan. Produced by Sri Lakshmi Movies, the film is slated to open in theatres on September 5.
