In the film industry, a performance that earns widespread acclaim can change an actor’s career overnight. But recognition does not always translate into a steady stream of opportunities. Sometimes, a defining role can also change the way an actor is perceived, leaving filmmakers uncertain about what they should offer next.
Keerthy Suresh experienced this unexpected side of success after playing legendary Telugu actor Savitri in Mahanati (2018). The biographical drama earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress, establishing the performance as a major milestone in her career. Yet, the period that followed was not as smooth as one might expect after such an achievement.
In a recent interview with News18, Keerthy revealed that she did not receive any new film offers for six months after Mahanati’s release. While she initially welcomed the break after years of working continuously, the absence of projects soon began to affect her finances. “My financial stability was going for a toss,” she said, recalling how the situation gradually dawned on her.
The actor explained that she had been working back-to-back and needed time away from shooting. Although she was initially happy to have a break, the uncertainty surrounding her next project made the period challenging. She nevertheless chose to use the time constructively, focusing on herself rather than viewing the lull solely as a professional setback.
One reason for the pause, Keerthy suggested, was the change in how the industry viewed her after Mahanati. Before the film, she was largely associated with girl-next-door roles. Her portrayal of Savitri, however, demonstrated a different range, and filmmakers appeared to be reconsidering the kinds of characters they could offer her. The recognition that followed the film did not immediately translate into suitable scripts.
Despite the financial uncertainty, Keerthy said she does not regret the time off. The break allowed her to take better care of herself and taught her lessons about managing her finances. In retrospect, she was able to see value in a period that had initially left her uncertain about her career.
The actor is currently promoting Akka, a Netflix series co-starring Radhika Apte. Set in the 1980s in the fictional South Indian city of Pernuru, the series follows a powerful sisterhood whose control is threatened by the arrival of an outsider. Keerthy plays Bhavani, one of the women at the centre of this world.
