After RK Studios, the iconic Kamalistan Studios in Mumbai is likely to be pulled down. Founded by legendary filmmaker Kamal Amrohi in 1958, the film studio is spread over 15 acres in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai. According to a statement, Bangalore-based RMZ Corp has entered an in-principle agreement with Mahal Pictures (the production house behind Kamalistan Studios) to redevelop the property into a corporation business park. Real estate group DB Realty will be partnering with RMZ on the project.

A poet and screenwriter, Kamal Amrohi directed the feature films Mahal (1949), Daera (1953), Pakeezah (1972) and Razia Sultan (1983). Other classics to have been canned at Kamalistan Studios include Amar Akbar Antony and Kaalia. Amrohi’s last film, Majnoon, starring Rajesh Khanna and Rakhi Gulzar, was shelved in 1979.

Earlier this year, Raj Kapoor’s RK Studios was sold off to Godrej Properties. The facility was badly gutted in a fire incident in 2017.
