30 Years of Rajinikanth 's Panakkaran: A nostalgic look-back at one of Superstar 's evergreen entertainers

Panakkaran is a remake of the Bollywood film, Lawaaris (1981), starring Amitabh Bachchan.

The film marked the first time collaboration of Rajinikanth and director P Vasu.

The success of the film prompted further collaborations between the pair.

The pair went on to do Mannan (1992), Uzhaippali (1993), Chandramukhi (2005) and Kuselan (2008).

The film was produced by Sathya Movies, and had music by Ilaiyaraaja.

Panakkaran was dubbed in Telugu as Kondaveedi Puli and released the same year.

Panakkaran was dubbed and released in Hindi as Dhanwan No 1, despite the film being a remake of a Bollywood film.

Sumithra played Rajini's mother in the film, while Gautami played his pair.

Rajinikanth's female get up in the 'Nooru Varusham' was talked about a lot.

The Superstar also appeared in several getups like a dwarf, a very tall man and a obese guy in the song.

While Mano sang the male version of 'Nooru Varusham', Janaki Amma performed the female version, which was shot on Sumithra in the flashback.

Ths 'Silence Silence' song, which became a huge FM hit, was sung by SPB and Janaki.

Ilaiyaraaja sang the 'Ullukulla Chakaravarthy' song in his own inimitable way.

The lyrics for the film were written by Vaali, Pulamaipithan, Piraisoodan, and Ilaiyaraaja.

This particular fight sequence, where Rajini faces off with a human giant, was also talked about.

The story was credited to Prakash Mehra, the writer of the original Amitabh Bachchan film.
