Revisiting Autograph: A nostalgic look-back at Cheran's heartfelt tribute to second chances at love

Autograph was Cheran's sixth film as director, and second film as the lead.

In a later interview, Chiyaan Vikram revealed that he had signed on to portray the lead role in Autograph; but however, he later opted because of scheduling problems.

Arvind Swamy recently revealed that he was offered the lead role in Autograph, but he declined it because he had retired from cinema then.

Aravind Swamy also said that he was happy that he did not accept the role because Cheran got the opportunity to become an actor and delivered a great performance.

Cheran later revealed that Autograph was partly autobiographical.

Four different cinematographers worked on the film.

Ravi Varman had shot the school episode in Senthil's early life with a 35 mm lens.

Vijay Milton had shot the Kerala portions involving Cheran and Gopika.

Dwaraknath shot the Chennai episode entirely with a steady cam.

Shanky Mahendran had shot the ''live' part' of the film, whenever the camera uses the point of view of Senthil's character.[

The soundtrack features 8 songs composed by Bharadwaj, with lyrics by Pa. Vijay, Snehan, and Cheran himself.

Autograph's background was scored by Sabesh-Murali.

Autograph was a tribute to the 1995 movie Beyond the Clouds.

Kanika made a special appearance in the film.

Autograph was screened at the Lyon Asian Film Festival in France and at the Montreal World Film Festival in Canada

Upon release, the film met with critical and commercial acclaim, and emerged an underdog success story.

From 67 prints at the time of release, the number went up to 90 after 25 days.

The film theatrical rights were sold for ₹2.5 crore and yielded a distributor share of ₹100 million in its lifetime.

The film was remade in Telugu as Naa Autograph, starring Ravi Teja, Bhumika, and Gopika.

It was remade in Kannada as My Autograph, starring Sudeep and Meena.

Autograph was also remade in Bengali as Amar Aponjon.

Autograph was screened at the Lyon Asian Film Festival in France and at the Montreal World Film Festival in Canada.

Although a sequel to the film titled Autograph 2 was announced by Cheran, it never materialised.

Autograph won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for best film in 2014
