On Monday, we had reported about ZEE5 announcing April 10 as the release date for the Rajat Kapoor directorial Everybody Loves Sohrab Handa. The official trailer of the film was released online on Thursday.
Featuring Vinay Pathak in the titular role, Everybody Loves Sohrab Handa promises to be an intense murder mystery that offers both thrills and a psychological drama at once. A friendly dinner party gathering soon takes a morbid turn after Sohrab (Vinay Pathak) gets murdered. Saurabh Shukla plays the investigating cop who gets to work with a frantic urgency. And soon, it becomes clear that there is more to this murder case than appears on the surface. As the investigation proceeds, more details emerge about the messy details of the dynamics between every of Sohrab’s friend, revealing murkier details of their relationships and inner self.
Produced by Applause Entertainment in association with Mithya Talkies, Everybody Loves Sohrab Handa boasts a stellar ensemble cast, with several prominent actors on board like Ranvir Shorey, Neil Bhoopalam, Sadiya Siddiqui, Koel Purie, Waluscha De Sousa, Saurabh Shukla, Chandrachoor Rai, and Palomi Ghosh. Rajat too plays a key role in the film.
Talking about his film, writer-director Rajat Kapoor said, “I am very interested in genre cinema, and this time around, I was drawn to whodunnit. What interested me was not just the mechanics of a whodunnit, but the emotional violence that precedes physical violence. And in many ways, this one goes beyond a 'whodunnit'.”
Vinay Pathak, who plays Sohrab Handa, said about his character, “He is the kind of person everyone tolerates, some fear, and many secretly despise. Playing him was exciting and uncomfortable at the same time.” Meanwhile, Ranvir Shorey said about the film, “This isn’t where heroes and villains are clearly defined. Every character is carrying something — regret, jealousy, anger. That ambiguity is what makes the story compelling. As actors, it gave us a lot to explore beneath the lines and it was a treat to be directed by my dear friend Rajat”.
While the film was completed long ago, there was no theatrical release for the Rajat Kapoor film. The thriller, however, did have a screening at the MAMI film festival in November 2023.
