Earlier this year, Mammootty was announced as one of the winners of the prestigious Padma Bhushan award. On Monday, it was revealed that he is set to be conferred with it on June 23, alongside the other Padma Award winners, including the late Satish Shah, Rajendra Prasad, and R Madhavan.
The announcement of the date has once again brought Mammootty's achievement to the limelight. Filmmaker Rahul Ravindran responded to the news earlier this Tuesday. Taking to his Instagram Stories space, Rahul wrote about the Megastar, "We could take 3 or 4 different phases of his career and filmography in each of those periods would be goated by itself. Especially the late 80s to mid 90s and the current phase. Padma Bhushan gets its due recognition sitting next to his name."
The director's comment is reminiscent of what Ram Gopal Varma said about Mohanlal winning the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
Mammootty has more than 400 films to his credits, some of which won him major recognition, including multiple national and state awards. While he received the Padma Shri award in 1998 from the Government of India, he has been named a Padma Bhushan winner only this year.
When he was announced as the winner, the actor wrote, "My gratitude to the Motherland. 'Padma Bhushan'. My heartfelt thanks to the nation, the people, and the Government for honoring me with this civilian honour. Republic Day Wishes to everyone."
He has been presented with the award for the distinguished contributions that he has made to the field of art. Recently, the superstar received an honorary doctorate from Mahatma Gandhi University.
On the film front, the actor was most recently seen in Patriot, which reunited him with Mohanlal after a long time. Mammootty's upcoming films include Padayaatra with director Adoor Gopalakrishnan, a project with Nithish Sahadev, and Dhanush's yet-untitled 55th film.
