The Malayalam feature film A Pregnant Widow was screened at the 17th Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFes). This was a significant moment for the film on a well-known festival stage. Festival delegates and audiences attended the screening, and the film’s team expressed gratitude for the chance to showcase their work.
Directed by Unni KR, A Pregnant Widow tells the story of a seven-months-pregnant woman after her husband’s death. The film addresses issues of caste discrimination, colour bias, and official processes. It shows how these challenges affect someone trying to find recognition and support in formal systems.
At the festival, director Unni talked about the importance of the Bengaluru screening for the team. “The film is about a woman whose husband, a government employee, dies after enduring constant discrimination related to caste, colour, and social identity,” he explained. “After his death, she must deal with bureaucratic processes to prove her marital status and access jobs and government benefits.”
The director explained the film's purpose, stating that it does not oppose the government. “We focus on the system and the processes that often neglect vulnerable individuals,” he said. Unni also shared that A Pregnant Widow has been shown at several other venues, including festivals in Kolkata, Pune, Chennai, and Sri Lanka.
Lead actor Twinkle Joby expressed her happiness about the film’s inclusion in the Bengaluru festival. “This role is one of the most challenging characters I have played,” she said. She thanked the director and the team, adding, “I am thankful to Unni KR for the opportunity and to the entire crew for their support.”
Twinkle Joby also mentioned that audience feedback at different screenings has been positive. “Viewers have connected with the realistic portrayal of the character, which has been meaningful for me as an actor,” she noted.
The screening at BIFFES contributes to the film’s ongoing journey through the festival circuit, where it continues to engage audiences with its exploration of social and institutional issues.
