Following the success of Chotta Mumbai and Ravanaprabhu, two popular Malayalam titles are set to return to cinemas in restored form, extending the current wave of re-releases. Mammootty-Bharathan’s Amaram and Dileep-Shafi’s Kalyanaraman are being readied for 4K remastered theatrical runs with Dolby Atmos.
Of the two, only Amaram, an emotional family drama, has a confirmed date. A television spot currently airing on Flowers TV announces that the Mammootty-led film will re-release on November 7. Written by A K Lohithadas, Amaram centres on Achootty (Mammootty), a poor fisherman who wants his daughter Radha to become a doctor, only to see his hopes collapse when she elopes with her childhood friend. The film is regarded as one of Mammootty’s finest dramatic turns, and is also remembered for KPAC Lalitha’s award-winning performance as Bhargavi, for which she received the National Award for Best Supporting Actress.
The rerelease date for Kalyanaraman is yet to be announced. The film follows Ramankutty (Dileep), a wedding planner whose own marriage plans are thrown off course by an astrologer’s warning. Its enduring popularity lies in its comic ensemble, including Dileep, Innocent and Salim Kumar, finding a special place in Malayali pop culture.
Meanwhile, Sibi Malayil's Summer in Bethlehem is also gearing up for its rerelease in 4K.
