Despite being at the centre of a heated political and social controversy, Mohanlal-Prithviraj Sukumaran's L2: Empuraan continues to make box office history. On Sunday, the film’s makers announced on social media that it had become the first Malayalam film to gross over $10 million from overseas markets within three days.
A day earlier, they had also claimed that L2: Empuraan had crossed Rs 100 crore at the global box office within just two days of its release on March 27, making it the fastest Malayalam film to achieve the milestone. Reports now suggest that the film is eyeing the Rs 200 crore mark worldwide at record pace.
L2: Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj and scripted by Murali Gopy, has faced significant backlash from right-wing groups, who have accused it of misrepresenting communal violence and portraying the BJP and RSS in a negative light. Amid the controversy, the film's lead actor Mohanlal issued a statement expressing regret over the distress caused by the film and assured that necessary changes would be made. Meanwhile, Prithviraj’s mother and veteran actor Mallika Sukumaran has come out strongly in defence of her son. In a social media post on Sunday, she dismissed allegations that Prithviraj had deceived Mohanlal and co-producer Antony Perumbavoor, calling the accusations a targeted attack against him.
