Amidst ongoing controversy surrounding L2: Empuraan, veteran actor Mohanlal has issued a statement on Sunday expressing regret over the film’s socio-political themes that have upset certain sections of the audience. Acknowledging the concerns, he affirmed that the makers have decided to remove contentious elements from the movie. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and penned by Murali Gopy, it has been accused by right-wing groups of portraying communal violence in a manner that allegedly vilifies the BJP and RSS.

Despite a disclaimer stating that L2: Empuraan is purely fictional, critics have argued that certain sequences resemble the 2002 Gujarat riots. In response to the backlash, the makers are reportedly making voluntary cuts to the film, including riot scenes, politically sensitive dialogues, and possibly the antagonist’s name.

In his statement, Mohanlal stressed his commitment to ensuring his films do not propagate hate against any political organisation, ideology, or religious group. “As an artist, it is my duty to make sure that none of my works spread animosity. I understand that Empuraan has deeply hurt some of my well-wishers due to its socio-political themes. Therefore, I and the Empuraan team sincerely regret the discomfort caused to my dear well-wishers. We fully acknowledge our collective responsibility in this matter and, with that understanding, have collectively decided to remove such elements from the film,” he said.

The controversy has led to increased scrutiny of Mohanlal, with some right-wing groups demanding the revocation of his honorary Lieutenant Colonel rank. Retired army officer and filmmaker Major Ravi, who has worked closely with Mohanlal, came to his defence, asserting that the actor had no role in shaping the film’s political narrative. While defending Mohanlal, Ravi was more critical of scriptwriter Murali Gopy and director Prithviraj, arguing that they should have handled the subject matter with greater caution. The controversy has also raised questions about the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), with critics pointing out that BJP and RSS members in the board failed to flag the film’s content.

Despite the backlash, Empuraan has been performing well at the global box office, although reviews have been mixed. Critics have noted that while the film expands the scope of its predecessor Lucifer, its protagonist’s invincibility makes the narrative somewhat predictable.

Concluding his statement, Mohanlal reaffirmed his bond with his audience. “For the past forty years, I have lived my cinematic journey as one among you. Your love and trust are my only strength. There is no Mohanlal beyond that,” he said. As the debate rages on, all eyes are on the Empuraan team to see how the film will be altered to address the concerns raised.
