Earlier, we reported that Unni Mukundan will next star in Malikappuram, directed by debutant Vishnu Sasi Shankar.

On Thursday, the makers announced that the film has been certified with clean U. Produced by Kavya Film Company (Mamangam) and Ann Mega Media, the film is penned by Abhilash Pillai. He previously wrote Pathaam Valavu, Night Drive and the Tamil film Cadaver. Director Vishnu is the son of the late filmmaker Sasi Shankar, known for films like Kunjikoonam and Mr Butler. Besides directing, Vishnu is also editing the film.

In an earlier conversation, screenwriter Abhilash said that Malikappuram, as the title implies, has a female Sabarimala devotee as the protagonist played by Devanandha. "It's about an 8-year-old girl Kalyani who regards Ayyappan as a superhero," he said, adding that Unni Mukundan's character will have a novelty factor as he has not essayed a character like this before. "It's a family drama with some fantasy elements."

The film also stars Indrans, Manoj K Jayan, Saiju Kurup, Ramesh Pisharody, Sampath Ram, Sripath, and Alfie Panjikaran. It has been shot in Sabarimala and surrounding locations. The technical crew includes cinematographer Vishnu Narayanan and music composer Ranjin Raj.
