Kannada actor and politician Upendra has once again sparked debate with his unconventional take on April 1, urging people to redefine the meaning of the day. Speaking at the launch of his Prajaakeeya party’s mobile application, Upendra said that a day widely observed as Fool’s Day should instead be celebrated as a 'Day of Intelligence' or a 'Day of Wisdom'.
Addressing the gathering, Upendra questioned the practice of normalising deception, even in the spirit of humour. He pointed out that April 1 has long been associated with making fools of others, but argued that society must evolve beyond such thinking. According to him, the day presents an opportunity to encourage awareness, critical thinking, and responsibility among citizens, rather than celebrating ignorance.
The actor-politician used the occasion to reiterate the core principles of his Prajaakeeya ideology, which emphasises governance driven by people rather than political labels. He stressed that individuals should think independently and not fall into predefined ideological brackets, reflecting his long-standing push for citizen-centric politics.
Upendra also cautioned against the growing tendency to categorise opinions into rigid political binaries. He noted that even a simple statement can quickly be interpreted through the lens of “left” or “right,” often missing the original intent. Emphasising mindful communication, he said one must be careful while speaking, as people are quick to label and divide perspectives.
The launch of the Prajaakeeya app marks another step in his effort to engage directly with citizens and promote participatory governance. His remarks have since triggered conversations online, with supporters praising his call for a more thoughtful society, while critics remain sceptical about the practical impact.
With this, Upendra continues to blend social commentary with political messaging, staying true to his distinctive approach to public discourse.
