Earlier, we reported about Wagner Moura receiving a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his performance in the Brazilian film The Secret Agent. At the same time, the film, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, has also received a nomination in the Best Picture Oscar category, as the first film from Brazil to do so. The nominations at the Academy Awards means a busy season promoting the film for its cast and crew, including Moura.
Recently, the actor spoke about the film set during the Brazilian Carnival festival, its Oscar nominations, and more with the Academy Awards' Ambassador Amelia Dimoldenberg. During the conversation, he spoke about what Carnival means for the people of Brazil. Moura said that the festival is a 'liberating' event there. "People in Brazil, they wait the entire year for Carnival. And so sometimes I think that the year in Brazil only starts after Carnival, like in March," Wagner Moura revealed.
According to him, the festival frees people in Brazil up from a mental perspective. He spoke about how certain people, such as a bank manager, would come down to the same vibe as others when at the festival as opposed to their place of work. "The manager, who would say, 'Hey, how are you, mister?' when you visit the bank, would be like, "Heyyyy!" at Carnival and would embrace you. It is like a whole other interaction," Moura explained. Subsequently, the actor suggested that he would not be able to attend the festival this time around due to his Oscars-related commitments.
For the uninitiated, The Secret Agent follows a research company employee (Moura) who comes back to Brazil, only to discover that his homeland is not the safe haven he once thought it would be. With Carnival as one of its central aspects, The Secret Agent also has a Best International Feature Film nomination at the Academy Awards this year. The awards ceremony is set to take place at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 15, with audiences in India getting access to it in the morning of March 16, Monday.
