Earlier this Friday, Oscar-winning music director AR Rahman launched the soundtrack for the critically acclaimed psychological fantasy-thriller Baab. Launched through his label, KM Musiq, and worldwide distributor Divo, the album is available across music streaming platforms now. Director Nayla Al Khaja's Baab marks AR Rahman's first film in Arabic, representing a major step in the music director's highly decorated career.
The Baab album has Rahman's signature cinematic grandeur and emotional depth, and it invites the audience into the mysterious universe of the film. Consisting of ten compositions from Rahman, the album explores themes of the supernatural, grief, trauma, and memory. Rahman's score also serves as an important element right through the narrative of Baab, which has become one of the most highly appreciated films in the UAE in recent times.
The film follows a woman named Wahida (Shaimaa El Fadul), who is emotionally affected by the passing of her twin sister. Dealing with her sister's memory and feelings of grief, she is drawn into an unusual journey through all these emotions and the Ras Al Khaimah mountains.
Speaking about the album, AR Rahman shared, "What drew me to Baab was its emotional complexity and the unique world Nayla had created. To stay authentic to the film, we explored a different soundscape, and it was a rewarding creative journey and a meaningful first step into Arabic cinema for me."
In his illustrious career that spans over three decades, the composer has worked on some of the most highly acknowledged films across industries. Aside from his work in Indian cinema, Rahman's credits include the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire, Couples Retreat, 127 Hours, Pelé: Birth of a Legend, and Warriors of Heaven and Earth.
Rahman's music has made its way across Asia, America, and Europe, but Baab marks a major addition to the composer's international repertoire, with it being his maiden film project in Arabic.
