After taking a strong and yet below-expectations opening at the box office, Ramayana: Part 1 showed further negative signs on its day 2 at the ticket counters. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the mythological epic stars Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, Sai Pallavi and Ravie Dubey in lead cast.
According to Sacnilk, Ramayana: Part 1, collected a nett figure of 48.05 crores from all languages, out of which 35.5 crores nett came from Hindi version. The figures reflect a 26 percent drop from its day 1 collections, which is rather large considering the good word-of-mouth response overall. The film however also crossed the 100 crore nett figure in India, and is expected to touch the same figure for its Hindi version on Saturday.
In the overseas market too, the film registered a 30 percent fall, while still garnering 35 crores gross.
All eyes are now on the weekend, which also coincidence with Laxmi Puja. So it remains to be seen whether the mythological epic, with its religious fervour, will draw more people in, or actually be affected by the festivities. Usually, films register a higher occupancy on the day before Diwali and for the 4-5 days following Laxmi Puja.
It is also to be noted that number of shows have decreased overall by 7 percent, despite the film having received largely positive reviews from both critics and film-goers on social media.
Produced by Namit Malhotra, Ramayana: Part 1 has a massive ensemble cast that features Lara Dutta, Rakul Preet Singh, Arun Govil, Sheeba Chaddha, Kajal Aggarwal, Vivek Oberoi, and Anupam Kher among others. Sunny Deol will make an appearance in part 2 of the film series that will release only in 2028.
In our review for the film, we noted, “Ramayana: Part 1 is a visual beast of epic proportions — ambitious, uneven, but one gamble that entirely rides on its scale, the much-touted 4000 crore budget. The one that is more about soaring spectacle than searing storytelling. And it delivers. Almost.”
