The casting of Sai Pallavi as Sita, in the upcoming Ranbir Kapoor starrer Ramayana, came as a major surprise to most film-goers. While fans await the release of the film’s trailer, to finally get a glimpse of Sai as Sita, Dipika Chikhlia, who played Sita in the 80s TV serial Ramayan, commented on Sai Pallavi’s casting as Sita during a recent interview.
Speaking to Variety, Dipika praised Sai Pallavi for being a ‘phenomenal actor, adding, “But I don’t know how she’ll look like Sita. Once we see her, we’ll know. At the moment, I have no clue.” Referring to the text in Tulsidas’ Ramayan, where Sita was described as ‘a woman with almond eyes, a certain height, hair and skin,’ Dipika added, “That’s what Ramanand Sagar was looking for, and he saw it in me. I know all of them are good actors. If they fit the bill, then it’s good. Sitaji with curly hair is not mentioned in Ramayan.”
In Ramayana, which was a massive success during its time, Dipika shared the limelight with Arun Govil who played the role of Rama. Incidentally, Arun has been cast as Dasharath in the upcoming film. Recalling their popularity and impact on audience, Dipika added, “Erasing the old Ramayan will be very difficult. We’re known for what we are. Sometimes, people forget my name, but they remember that I played Sita. Our Ramayan was also watched by the new generation when it aired on Doordarshan during the pandemic. I think our Ramayan will weigh very heavily on the “Ramayana” film.”
Earlier this year, Sai Pallavi made her Hindi debut with the Aamir Khan production Ek Din, where she was paired with Junaid Khan.
Meanwhile, the makers of Ramayana announced that they are tying up with Sony Pictures for the international distribution plans of their film, also announcing that the trailer released has been postponed indefinitely. The film, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, is set for a grand release on Diwali this year.
