Alia Bhatt and Sharvari's latest action thriller Alpha is off to a promising start as it registered over Rs 15 crore on its opening day worldwide. According to trade website Sacnilk, the film earned a total India net collections of Rs 9.25 crore. With India gross collections at Rs 11.10 crore, the film's total revenue including its worldwide numbers are at Rs 16.10 crore. These numbers are expected to increase through the weekend and surpass Rs 25 crore across the globe.
While Alpha has beaten Alia's previous film Jigra's (2024) opening (Rs 4.55 crore), the spy movie is the lowest opener among Yash Raj's (YRF) Spy Universe films. Pathaan (2023) was among the highest for the universe with Rs 57 crore haul. Alpha's response seems to be the outcome of mixed and negative word-of-mouth reviews from critics and audiences following its release. It is also to be noted that the film faced severe flak and hate for its story, screenplay and other aspects even before it hit theatres.
On Day 1, Alpha saw an overall theatre occupancy of 20.40 per cent, with morning shows at 9.92 per cent, afternoon shows at 17.85 per cent, evening shows at 19.69 per cent, and night shows at 34.15 per cent.
According to the plotline, Alpha follows a highly trained assassin raised in isolation as a super-soldier by a rogue commander, when she discovers the dark truth about her family and her stolen childhood, she teams up with her long lost sister to take down her creator and his illicit military program. Prior to the release, Alpha received a UA16+ certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with certain expletives being muted or removed. The impact of certain scenes in the first half has been toned down. Multiple stabbing visuals in the second half have either been reduced or replaced with alternate shots.
An excerpt from our CE review of the film reads, "Alpha is a stale, reheated dish from YRF’s assembly-line kitchen. Alia’s all-black combat outfits seem to be a result of plundering Lara Croft’s wardrobe. An action sequence involving bullets reminded me of The Matrix series. There seems to be no original idea in the film and the whole spy prototype seems to be lifted from The Mission Impossible franchise."
Directed by Shiv Rawail, Alpha is the seventh film in the YRF Spy Universe and the first female-led instalment in the line-up. The film also stars Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor in pivotal roles. Hrithik Roshan also had a special appearance in the film, reprising his role as Kabir.
