Anil Kapoor to produce, star in Nayak 2: Report

‘The Nayak sequel is in works and we are producing the film together,’ said producer Deepak Mukut

Anil Kapoor might just be returning to the sequel of his 2001 entertainer Nayak: The Real Hero. Recently reports had come in that Anil had acquired the rights of the film, which were being held so far by producer Deepak Mukut. A new report by the Hindustan Times states that Deepak and Anil are producing Nayak 2 together and the actor will also be facing the camera for of the film.

Nayak tells the story of a television journalist Shivaji Rao who questions the Chief Minister of Maharashtra (played by Amrish Puri) during a live newsroom debate and end up becoming the CM for a day to prove his righteousness.

The film was originally produced by AS Rathnam and its rights were later held by producer Deepak Mukut. When Hindustan Times reached out to Deepak to confirm if Anil had bought the rights from him, he said, “He and I are making the film together. It is too early to say anything about it since several discussions are going on.”

He also confirmed the sequel, “Yes the sequel is in works and we are producing the film together.” When asked if Anil will be facing the camera in part 2, Deepak said, “Ofcourse he will!”

A previous report by Bollywood Hungama had also quoted a source stating that Anil is really excited about the project. “He (Anil Kapoor) is fully aware of the love he has garnered for the film over the years and believes that the subject of Nayak has tremendous potential for a second part,” the source had said.

The original Nayak’s cast included Rani Mukerji, Amrish Puri, Paresh Rawal, Saurabh Shukla, Johny Lever, Shivaji Satam and Neena Kulkarni. Directed by Shankar, the 2001 film is a remake of his 1999 Tamil-language film Mudhalvan.
