Amar Singh Chamkila director took to his Instagram Stories to share his delight at the fact that his film, a biopic of the eponymous Punjabi folk singer, has received two International Emmy Awards nominations: one for Diljit Dosanjh for Best Actor and the other in the Best TV Movie/Mini-Series category. Calling it "happy news" and "a major milestone," the filmmaker dedicated the nominations to the team of Chamkila and the "people of Punjab who have contributed to the film." He said that Amar Singh Chamkila is "very much a film of that land."
Imtiaz also shared a video of Diljit performing a rap song on stage to a rapturous audience and captioned the post, "Punjabi EMMYS aagaye Oye! (Punjabi EMMYs are here)".
The filmmaker's biopic of the late musician Amar Singh Chamkila earned critical acclaim for its nonlinear storytelling, raw music, and the performances, led by Diljit in the titular role. In our review of the film last year, Kartik Bhardwaj wrote, "Diljit plays Chamkila with an adorable softness and servility needed for the role. The global star feels at home on stage as he croons the late singer’s original songs with assurance."
Widely regarded as one of the best Hindi films of 2024, Amar Singh Chamkila also stars Parineeti Chopra, Apinderdeep Singh, Kumud Mishra, Nisha Bano, and Rahul Mittra, among others.
The other nominees in the best actor category comprise David Mitchell for Ludwig, Oriol Pla for Yo, adicto, and Diego Vasquez for One Hundred Years of Solitude. The fellow nominees in the category of Best TV Movie/Mini-Series are Herrhausen: The Banker and the Bomb, Lost Boys and Fairies, and Vencer o Morir. The International Emmy Awards Gala is slated to take place on November 24 this year.
