The teaser of Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi’s upcoming film, Haq was unveiled by the makers on Tuesday. Directed by Suparn S Varma (Rana Naidu, The Family Man), the film also stars Vartika Singh, Danish Husain and Sheeba Chadha and Aseem Hattangady in pivotal roles.

The film is inspired by the Supreme Court’s 1985 judgement in the case of Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs. Shah Bano Begum, where the court ruled that a divorced Muslim woman is entitled to maintenance under the law. Ahmed Khan, a prominent lawyer, had divorced his wife, Shah Bano after 14 years of marriage and abandoned her along with their children, which made her to file a petition in court for giving her maintenance under section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The teaser introduces Yami as Shazia Bano fighting the case in court. In the film, Emraan plays Abbas, the enigmatic lawyer and her husband. “We are going to create history in this case,” says Abbas in a scene where he is dressed as a lawyer. The teaser gives a glimpse into some powerful moments in the courtroom where Shazia is seen fighting her case. It ends with a monologue of Shazia where she calls herself an Indian Muslim woman and bats to be treated equally under law along with other citizens.

Sharing the teaser, the makers wrote, “Shazia Bano takes her husband Abbas to court after he abandons her and their children, sparking a national battle over faith, women’s rights, and justice. Inspired by the landmark Supreme Court judgement of Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs. Shah Bano Begum. Haq is the story of one woman’s fight for her rights and justice.”

The film is written by Reshu Nath and features music by Vishal Mishra with the words of Kaushal Kishore.

Produced by Vineet Jain, Vishal Gurnani, Juhi Parekh Mehta and Harman Baweja, the film is set to be released in theatres on November 7.
