Few romantic stories have endured as long as Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, with its observations on class, family expectations and the assumptions people make about one another continuing to find new audiences. The novel’s central romance has inspired several screen adaptations, most notably the 1995 BBC miniseries starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth and the 2005 film featuring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.
The latest adaptation revisits the relationship between Elizabeth Bennet and the wealthy Mr Darcy, whose initial misunderstandings gradually give way to affection. Set in 19th-century England, the story also follows the Bennet family as Elizabeth and her four sisters navigate questions of love, marriage and social standing.
Netflix has now unveiled the official trailer for its six-part limited series, starring Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet and Jack Lowden as Mr Darcy. Olivia Colman plays Mrs Bennet, who is determined to find suitable husbands for her daughters, while Rufus Sewell appears as Mr Bennet. The series will premiere on the streaming platform on December 3.
The trailer offers a glimpse of the Bennet household, the sisters’ romantic prospects and the growing tension between Elizabeth and Darcy. Their relationship develops against a backdrop of social expectations and family complications, with the story retaining the romantic misunderstandings and sharp observations that have made Austen’s novel a classic.
The ensemble also includes Freya Mavor as Jane Bennet, Daryl McCormack as Mr Bingley, Louis Partridge as Mr Wickham, Jamie Demetriou as Mr Collins, Rhea Norwood as Lydia Bennet, Siena Kelly as Caroline Bingley and Fiona Shaw as Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Hopey Parish and Hollie Avery play Mary and Kitty Bennet, respectively.
Dolly Alderton, known for Everything I Know About Love, has written all six episodes, with Euros Lyn, who directed Heartstopper, helming the series. Corrin also serves as an executive producer alongside Alderton, Lyn, Laura Lankester, Will Johnston and Louise Mutter. Lisa Osborne is the producer.
The new series will offer viewers another interpretation of Austen’s enduring romance, with six episodes providing room to explore the Bennet sisters, their suitors and the social world surrounding them.
