Filmmaker Curry Barker's upcoming film, Obsession, brings an unsettling and fresh spin on the horror trope that warns characters to be careful of what they wish for. The critically acclaimed film follows a young man, named Bear (Michael Johnston), who holds a strong desire for his childhood friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette) and gets his hands on a toy that makes a one-time wish real. What starts as a case of affection very quickly turns a game of obsession.

The official logline reads, "A hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price."

Speaking about the film, actor Inde Navarrette said that after reading its screenplay, she had a full understanding of Nikki. The actor said, "She is the first character that I understood completely. It was such a euphoric feeling being that confident in knowing who your character is."

The actor's deep understanding of the character meant that she could apply it to her performance from the get-go. Speaking about it, Barker added, "On the first day of shooting, Inde’s first scene was when Nikki freaks out after they kiss, and the first take is what you see in the movie. When we saw it that first day, we knew we had the perfect actor for the role."

The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last September. Since then, critics have praised the film, especially its performances and its exploration of desire as a theme. In a recent poster, the film's makers mentioned a critical consensus for it, which described it as an "an instant horror classic".

Also starring Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter, among others, Obsession marks Barker's second directorial venture after his 2024 debut, Milk and Serial. The film is set to hit theatres in India on May 29, Friday.
