Filmmaker Curry Barker's latest hit Obsession has not just made waves across the globe with its over $300 million run, but has also created a major splash in the Indian box office. According to trade websites, the horror-thriller has minted over Rs 75 crore in India, almost ten times the budget of Barker's film.
The 26-year-old YouTuber-turned-filmmaker is thrilled and has now revealed that he did not expect the response from Indian audiences. "I definitely did not expect Obsession to be a big hit in India. I didn’t expect it to be a big hit anywhere, really," he said, in a recent interview with Variety India.
Overwhelmed by the support, Barker said, "You hope and dream that your movie is successful and that it resonates with people. But I can’t believe what it’s doing. I mean, we made this movie for nothing. I just can’t believe that it’s getting the recognition that it’s getting."
Barker said he was "shocked" by the cultural impact his film has made in the country. "The amount of comedy videos and fan art that people are making for the film is really cool to see," he said, adding that he liked seeing people recreating scenes from the film and putting a comedy spin on it. "It's just really cool to see," he remarked.
Released on May 29, Curry Barker's Obsession follows the story of a youngster (Michael Johnston) who uses a novelty toy stick to make his longtime friend (Inde Navarrette) fall in love with him. However, what starts as a case of desire turns obsessive with dark and sinister repercussions. The film has officially beaten Ryan Reynolds critically-acclaimed Project Hail Mary to become the the biggest Hollywood hit this year. Last year, Brad Pitt's F1 made a massive box office revenue in India.
