Disclosure Day undergoes censorship for expletives; fans question the cuts

Here is what netizens are intensely talking about with regard to Steven Spielberg's latest film

Steven Spielberg's film Disclosure Day released in theatres earlier this Friday. The film brings Spielberg back to a science-fiction cum alien genre after a long time. While he has made multiple sci-fi films in the recent past, his last extraterrestrial film is 2005's War of the Worlds, starring Tom Cruise. Interestingly, Disclosure Day has faced some cuts from the Censor Board in India.

The board had the makers remove expletives from the film, which might be a common practice for theatrical releases in India. However, what caught the eye of netizens is the omission of the word 'sex' from the film, including the subtitle.

According to a screenshot for the Disclosure Day censor certificate that is doing the rounds on social media, the board suggested deleting 'f**k' and 'sex' from the film's dialogue and subtitles. As per it, the film has a runtime of around 145 minutes.

Fan backlash for such certification is not a new thing in India. For example, the board had the makers of Superman (2025) remove multiple scenes for its India release, drawing flak from film buffs and other audiences. It faced much criticism from viewers at the time, especially because some intimate scenes of David Corenswet's Superman and Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane were a major part of the promotions for the film.

Coming back to Disclosure Day, the film stars Emily Blunt as a television meteorologist who uncovers a conspiracy involving the cover-up of aliens on Earth and tries to crack the mystery behind it with the help of an expert in cybersecurity (Josh O'Connor).

The film has been receiving positive appreciation from audiences and critics ever since its world premiere and New York screening.
