Johnny Depp is returning to the big screen after a long gap as Ebenezer Scrooge, the iconic character based on the 1843 novel A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Directed by Ti West, Ebenezer sees the 63-year-old award-winning actor in an unrecognisable avatar in the first trailer for the film as he terrorises citizens with his curmudgeonly temperament.
The trailer briefly teases Ebenezer with his on-screen family, including Daisy Ridley as Emily Cratchit and Sam Claflin as Fred. The infamous Christmas grouch Ebenezer Scrooge is also shown being tormented by the terrifying spirits of Christmas. From interacting with the Ghost of Christmas Past (Andrea Riseborough) to confrontation with Bob Cratchit (Rupert Grint) and a volatile outburst against Marley (Ian McKellen), the trailer treats audiences to Scrooge's life throughout the Christmas season.
Dressed in full make-up, prosthetics and Scrooge attire, Johnny Depp also made a surprise appearance on the streets of San Diego's Gaslamp district, before crashing the Comic-Con. In footage shared by Deadline, when a person off-camera yelled out to the star, "Good day to you, Mr. Scrooge," Depp transitioned into character by replying, "What’s so pleasant about it?"
Over the years, the classic novel has witnessed multiple adaptations on film and television.
The upcoming film also features Sam Claflin, Arthur Conti, Charlie Murphy, and Daisy Ridley in key roles. Ebenezer is set to hit the screens on November 13.
Ebenezer marks Depp's first major film since Waiting for the Barbarians, released in 2019.
