Actors Cameron Diaz and Stephen Merchant are all set to star together in an upcoming rom-com from Amazon MGM Studios. The yet-to-be-titled film will be directed by Merchant from a screenplay he co-wrote with John Butler.

According to the makers, the film centres on a career-obsessed British man (Merchant) working at a luxury New York hotel who requires a spouse to maintain appearances. He enters a convenient arrangement with a cash-strapped stand-up comedian (Diaz) seeking health insurance. What begins as a practical agreement gradually evolves into an unforeseen romantic connection.

The film is produced by Lee Eisenberg and Merchant, alongside Point Grey Pictures’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver and Josh Fagen. Natalie Sandy serves as executive producer.

Butler has written and directed films including Handsome Devil, starring Andrew Scott, and Papi Chulo, featuring Matt Bomer, and most recently helmed the six-part series These Sacred Vows with Jason O’Mara. He also collaborated with Merchant as writer-director on The Outlaws.

Known for her work in The Mask, My Best Friend’s Wedding, There’s Something About Mary, Charlie’s Angels and other films, Diaz will be seen next in the dark comedy film Outcome, where she stars opposite Keanu Reeves and Bomer. She also has Netflix's Bad Day and DreamWorks' Shrek 5 in her kitty.

An Emmy-, BAFTA- and Golden Globe-winning filmmaker, Stephen Merchant is a director, actor, writer and producer known for creating and starring in The Outlaws. His recent screen credits include Netflix’s Goodbye June and AMC’s The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Merchant also wrote and directed Fighting With My Family and co-created Hello Ladies, The Office, Extras and Life’s Too Short with Ricky Gervais.
