Filmmaker Michael Showalter is set to direct a modern retelling of Serendipity for Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax.
The writer of the original film, Marc Klein, will work on the script of the project. It will be produced by Showalter and Jordana Mollick for Semi-Formal Productions, alongside Simon Fields, who produced the original film, according to the entertainment news outlet Deadline.
The original film was directed by Peter Chelsom and featured John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. It revolves around strangers Jonathan (Cusack) and Sara (Beckinsale) who meet in a New York department store over a pair of gloves. Believing in destiny, Sara refuses to trade real contact info. Instead, they test fate to see if the universe will reunite them years later before their respective weddings.
The film, which released in 2001 and went on to earn over USD 70 million at the global box office. It also starred Molly Shannon, John Corbett and E Levy, among others.
Jonathan Glickman, Alexandra Loewy, and Thom Zadra of Miramax and Klein will executive produce for the film.
