Michael Showalter is set to return to Amazon MGM Studios, signing on to direct a fresh, modern reinterpretation of Baby Boom, the beloved 1987 Diane Keaton-led dramedy. The deal arrives just ahead of the release of his holiday ensemble comedy Oh. What. Fun., which debuts December 3 on Prime Video.

Specifics about the updated storyline are being kept tightly guarded. The project is being produced by Stacey Sher under her Shiny Penny banner, with Showalter and Jordana Mollick producing for Semi-Formal Productions. Katie Aquino serves as executive producer for Shiny Penny. Emily Crook will oversee the film for Semi-Formal, which currently holds a multi-year first-look agreement with the studio.

The original Baby Boom, directed by Charles Shyer and released by United Artists, centred on Keaton’s portrayal of J.C. Wiatt, an accomplished New York career woman whose life is upended when she unexpectedly becomes the guardian of an infant. Penned by Nancy Meyers and Shyer and produced by Meyers, the film arrived during a defining period in Keaton’s career, following iconic performances in Annie Hall, The Godfather films, and others. The actor passed away on October 11.

Showalter’s ongoing relationship with Amazon MGM continues to grow. His upcoming holiday film, Oh. What. Fun., features Michelle Pfeiffer as Claire Clauster, a mother planning a festive day for herself after being accidentally overlooked by her family. The ensemble includes Felicity Jones, Chloë Grace Moretz, Danielle Brooks, Dominic Sessa, Denis Leary, Havana Rose Liu, Maude Apatow, Devery Jacobs, Jason Schwartzman, Eva Longoria, Joan Chen, and Rose Abdoo.

This new Baby Boom reimagining also extends the ongoing collaboration between Sher’s Shiny Penny and Showalter’s Semi-Formal, who recently partnered on the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s Verity, slated to arrive in theatres on October 2, 2026.
