Idris Elba is set to return behind the camera and in front of it, as he takes on the dual role of director and star in Apple Original Films’ upcoming feature This Is How It Goes, based on Neil LaBute’s acclaimed play.

The project, described as a tense psychological thriller, follows a couple who seemingly by chance reconnect with an old school acquaintance and invite him into their lives—with unsettling consequences.

Elba is no stranger to the material. In 2005, he appeared in a West End production of LaBute’s play alongside Ben Chaplin and Megan Dodds, portraying the character Cody. For the film version, however, Elba will step into a different, undisclosed role.

The screenplay is being adapted by Nathaniel Price (Mr. Loverman, The Outlaws). Casting beyond Elba has yet to be revealed.

The film will also mark the first collaboration between Apple Original Films and 22Summers, the production banner Elba recently co-founded with Diene Petterle and Gina Carter. 22Summers is producing the film alongside Gaumont. Gina Carter produces for 22Summers, while Alison Jackson produces for Gaumont. Elba will also serve as executive producer under 22Summers, with Sidonie Dumas executive producing on behalf of Gaumont.

Elba previously made his feature directorial debut with Yardie in 2018 and has two more directorial projects on the way: Above the Below and Infernus, both of which he also headlines.

His ongoing relationship with Apple TV+ has proven fruitful. Elba executive produced and starred in the hit thriller series Hijack, which has a sequel currently in the works following its 2022 greenlight.
