Hugh Jackman is once again reflecting on his long journey with Wolverine, and this time, he’s making it clear that he’s done predicting his own exit.
After famously declaring that 2017’s Logan would be his final outing as the adamantium-clawed mutant, Jackman surprised fans by suiting up again for 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine. Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, he admitted that he’s learned not to make absolute statements. “You allearnty, ‘Nope, I’m not doing that again,’ and then you go and make another one,” he said, adding that he now refuses to shut the door completely. “I’m never saying ‘never’ ever again… I really meant it the first time, until the day I changed my mind.”
Jackman’s shift in attitude began years earlier, when the first Deadpool movie hit theatres. During the press tour for Deadpool & Wolverine, he recalled how seeing Ryan Reynolds’ movie stirred something he thought he’d put away. “Those two characters together — I knew it,” he told Fandango. “I rang Ryan an—Ist said, ‘Let’s do it.’ I hadn’t even called my agent. I had to ring him later and say, ‘Oh, by the way, I’ve already committed to a movie.’”
Not everyone was immediately enthusiastic about his comeback, though. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed to Empire that he initially cautioned Jackman against returning. “I told him, ‘Hugh, don’t come back. You had the greatest ending with Logan. That’s not something we should undo,’” Feige recalled.
Ultimately, the multiverse provided a loophole. Deadpool & Wolverine allowed Jackman to portray a different variant of the character, meaning his celebrated farewell in Logan remains untouched.
For now, Jackman isn’t making promises about whether this was truly the last time fans will see him as Wolverine, and after his history of changing his mind, he seems content to leave the claws on standby
